Leicester Energy Agency

Leicester Energy Agency was formed in February 1996 with funding from the European Commissions Save II programme as a partnership between Leicester City Council and De Montfort University, having a partner energy agency called Barnagel, in Barcelona Spain.

The objectives of the Agency were:

  • to improve the energy efficiency of up to 5,000 businesses, resulting in an average saving of 10% on their current energy bills.

  • to attempt to create up to five new small to medium enterprises to provide energy services to homes and businesses

  • to set up an Energy Services Company (ESCO)

  • To achieve a reduction in energy consumption of between 340-840 TJ in Leicester overall.

Since the end of the European Commission funding in 1999, the Agency continued by attracting external funding, as well as drawing on the support of the City Council and De Montfort University. During its first three years Leicester Energy Agency employed two full time staff and a part time administration assistant. It currently employs four full time staff managing local, regional national and European projects and hosting the Secretariat for UK HECA.

The Agency currently has no management board.
