- automated Intelligent Metering for Small to Medium-sized Enterprises

Contract no. EIE/07/136/SI2.466711
Duration: 12/2007 - 11/2009

What is aM&T?

Automated Monitoring and Targeting (aM&T) is a systematic procedure for detecting (and helping to diagnose) wasteful use of energy, water and other consumables. It involves automatically collecting half hourly energy/water consumption information and sending this data to a computer system for analysis. Analysis of the data can help identify savings opportunities.

Leicester Energy Agency (Leicester City Council) has been installing a low-power radio automatic meter reading and analysis system over the entire city. Any meter in a 20-mile radius of the city can now be read automatically. We monitor and report on council buildings, leisure centres, schools and businesses.

Rising energy costs affect the ability of many companies to remain competitive. There has never been a better time to implement energy saving measures.

Benefits of aM&T:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Influence utility contracts
  • Find errors in utility bills
  • Reduce CO2 emissions to meet emissions target
  • Automatically know when exceptions have occurred
  • Make savings that will have a direct impact on the bottom line of the company

We undertake to:

  • Provide you with a bureau service which will include energy analysis, advice, reports, billing information, staff energy efficiency training as required.
  • Not give out details of your involvement or consumption without your permission.

You undertake to:

  • Install intelligent metering that can communicate with our system.
  • Provide internal floor area, construction details, and staff numbers for your premises.

Why are we doing this?

  • To confirm and build upon our position as leader in Intelligent
  • Metering both in the UK and Europe.
  • Leicester City Council is committed to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions within the City. This project will be one way to help achieve this.
  • De Montfort University is keen to obtain actual usage data from businesses to improve the national benchmarking figures.

A quote on the use of automatic monitoring in Leicester:

“Effective management means that a building owner not only minimises consumption but receives regular reports on all energy usage, enabling strategies for eliminating wastage and maximising production.”
- Leicester City Council Energy Management

A recent Carbon Trust study identified an average 12% carbon saving in small/medium businesses using advanced metering, with an average 5% carbon saving from reduced energy/water consumption.

One Leicester business has implemented savings which have quickly paid back the initial cost of intelligent metering - “Since making changes, the company has saved £10,000 to date and hopes to continue to realise the full annual savings of £20,000”

The European Commission ‘Intelligent Metering for Small and Medium-sized Businesses (aIM 4 SMEs)’ project

Leicester Energy Agency (Leicester City Council) is participating in the two-year European Commission supported project ‘Intelligent Metering for Small and Medium-sized Businesses’ (aim4smes.com). - The project involves 9 partners from 5 countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal and the UK), including businesses, local/regional energy agencies, an association of municipalities, universities and a utility company. - The project intends to demonstrate the potential for energy savings from automatic intelligent metering in small/medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Anticipated results of the project include:

  • 75-100 SMEs being using intelligent metering for monitoring in the project
  • Energy cost, consumption and related carbon dioxide savings of 10-25% in participating SMEs
  • SME staff trained in energy savings opportunities/intelligent metering
